Assistant Chef Instructor
Brigade Jr. Academy Summer Program

Position Overview:
The Assistant Chef Instructor supports the Lead Chef Instructor in delivering high-quality, hands-on culinary training to students aged 14–17. This role assists in preparing for daily lessons, supervising student activities, maintaining a safe kitchen environment, and encouraging students as they develop basic culinary skills and prepare for their ServSafe Food Handler Certification.
The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about culinary arts, enjoys working with youth, and is a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
Immediate Supervisor:
Lead Chef Instructor and Program Manager, Brigade Jr. Academy
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the preparation and setup of kitchen stations, supplies, and ingredients for daily lessons.
- Support the Lead Chef Instructor during culinary demonstrations, student exercises, and classroom activities.
- Monitor and coach students during practical cooking sessions, emphasizing proper technique and safety.
- Help enforce kitchen safety, food handling, and sanitation protocols at all times.
- Provide individual guidance and encouragement to students to build confidence and skills.
- Help maintain kitchen cleanliness and organization before, during, and after each class.
- Assist in tracking student attendance and participation.
- Collaborate with the Program Shopper to ensure supply lists are accurate and fulfilled.
- Support the final showcase event by helping students with preparation and execution.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 1+ years of professional culinary experience or culinary education.
- Previous experience working with youth preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of culinary techniques, safety practices, and kitchen equipment.
- ServSafe Food Handler Certification preferred (or ability to obtain before program start).
- Positive attitude, patience, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a teaching team.
- First Aid/CPR Certification preferred (or willingness to complete prior to program start).
Work Environment:
- Primarily indoor kitchen/classroom environment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must be flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced, youth-centered learning environment.
Compensation:
- Part-time hourly position.
- Rate commensurate with experience.
- Paid bi-weekly.
